Rebel on Rebel

As a youngster I was often asked the asked the age old question, “What are you going to be when you grow up?” Fortunately I never ventured down any rebellious paths, raising hell, leading a gang of rebels as my name might suggest.

I had visions of being an actor, film producer, photographer, artist………. Becoming a professional horse rider, riding for Australia at the Olympic Games, well now, that was always a dream of mine ever since I was a little kid. In September 2004 that dream became a reality when Oaklea Groover and I represented Australia at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Here’s briefly how we got there….

I was born and raised in Kilcoy, Qld, the home of “beef” and the Kilcoy Pastoral Co, (the local abattoir), better known as the “College on the Hill.” After graduating from year 12 at Kilcoy High School in 1994, I continued my education at the “College on the Hill”. Working at the meat works enabled me to earn money, all of which I spent on my 4 horses which I campaigned while working my new full-time job.

After chopping and packaging enough meat to turn me almost vegetarian, my 4 year stint at the college on the hill was finally over. I left as a qualified “meat worker” but more importantly with enough money to give full time training and riding a go.       For the next 3 years I worked, trained and competed horses in the Hunter Valley and made the transition from horses being my hobby to horses being my profession. At the end of 2003 I took Oaklea Groover to compete at Adelaide 4* and we ran 5th, this instantly earned us a place on the National Elite Squad.

2004 was our most successful year, with many placings and wins, the most notable was being the highest placed Australian at the Athens Olympics, we ran 11th. My Olympic experience was simply amazing. To represent my country and become an Olympian was the most incredible buzz, something I can highly recommend and something that I would like to do again.

In this sport I have experienced the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows; but it is the incredible highs that have made all the lows, the long hours and the tough decisions worthwhile. For all of those of you who are involved in the emotional roller-coaster that is Eventing, remember the next high could be really, really high and just around the corner.
